Why Is the Keyboard QWERTY and Not ABC?

Why is the keyboard not in alphabetical order? The QWERTY layout is 150 years old, it was never designed to slow you down, and historians still argue about where it came from.

Look down at your keyboard. The letters are in an order that makes no sense: Q, W, E, R, T, Y. Not alphabetical, not grouped by how often you use them, not arranged for your fingers. It is the single most-used interface in your life, and its layout looks like someone spilled the alphabet.

There is a reason, it is about 150 years old, and almost everything people confidently tell you about it is wrong.

It starts with a machine that jammed

In 1868, a Milwaukee printer named Christopher Latham Sholes, working with Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule, patented a writing machine. Early versions had the letters in something close to alphabetical order across two rows. Remington began manufacturing the design in 1873, and by the time it reached desks the layout had shuffled into something very close to what you are looking at now.

The problem Sholes was solving was mechanical. On those early typewriters, each key swung a metal arm called a typebar up to strike the paper at a single shared point. If you hit two neighbouring keys in quick succession, their typebars could collide and lock together, and the typist had to stop and untangle them by hand.

The fix was to look at which letters people actually type back to back, and then move those pairs apart on the machine, so the arms swinging up would approach from different angles instead of the same one.

That is why the layout looks scrambled. It is not scrambled by letter. It is arranged by pairs of letters, which is invisible unless you know to look for it.

The “designed to slow you down” story is wrong

You have almost certainly heard that QWERTY was deliberately designed to slow typists down, because they were typing faster than the machine could handle.

It is a great story and there is no evidence for it. It also does not survive five seconds of thinking about the business. Sholes was trying to sell typewriters against pen and ink. A machine advertised as slower than the competition is not a product.

The distinction matters and it is small: the goal was to stop typebars from clashing, not to stop fingers from moving. Separating common letter pairs does both at once, so the two explanations look identical from the outside. Only one of them was the intention.

Where historians actually disagree

Here is the part that gets left out of the usual telling. The jamming explanation is the mainstream account, but it is not unchallenged.

Researchers Koichi Yasuoka and Motoko Yasuoka of Kyoto University published a study of the layout’s development arguing that the standard story does not fit the documentary record. Their case is that some of the earliest heavy users of these machines were telegraph operators transcribing Morse code as it arrived, and that the layout was shaped by the demands of that work rather than purely by typebar geometry.

Look at the evidence in the layout itself and it gets genuinely murky:

  • The letters Z and S sit oddly given how often the pairing appears when transcribing Morse, where the two characters are easy to confuse until the next signal arrives.
  • The order shifted repeatedly through the early 1870s, which is hard to square with a single clean engineering fix.
  • Sholes left no clear written account explaining his reasoning, which is why there is room to argue at all.

The honest position: the layout was shaped by the mechanical and commercial pressures of the 1870s, and the exact weighting of those pressures is still debated. Anyone who tells you the origin is settled is skipping a real argument.

The famous top-row trick

One detail almost always comes up: every letter in the word TYPEWRITER appears on the top row. The usual claim is that this was arranged so salesmen could rattle off the product name quickly during a demonstration.

Treat that one gently. It is repeated everywhere and documented nowhere. Given how many times the layout changed, a nine-letter coincidence is entirely plausible, and a good story tends to outlive the check on whether it is true.

So why are we still using it?

Because switching is expensive and being right is not enough.

August Dvorak patented a rival layout in 1936, putting the most common letters under the strongest fingers on the home row. On paper it is clearly better designed. The most-quoted study showing large speed gains was run by Dvorak himself, and later reviewers, notably in a 1990 analysis titled The Fable of the Keys, found the real advantage far smaller than the legend.

Even if Dvorak were meaningfully faster, it would not matter much. Every keyboard, every typing class, every muscle memory in every pair of hands is QWERTY. The cost of moving is paid by each person individually and the benefit only arrives if everyone moves together, which is why the market never does.

So the keyboard under your hands is a solution to a mechanical problem that has not existed since typebars did, preserved because 150 years of people already learned it. The letters are not in a sensible order. They are in the order that won. Strictly FYI.
